Community Programs
The Backyard Gardeners sponsor or present a variety of programs withing the community that include "Garden Talks" a year long series of talks on horticulture subjects presented once a month at the Chesapeake Central Library; the Spring Gardening Faire, held at the Chesapeake Arboretum, that includes a plant sale and information on horticulture subjects; and Bonsai Classes taught at Tidewater Community College (TCC) by Ronnie Baum with the Virginia Bonsai Society. We also support programs such as Paint Your Heart Out, a Rotary program that assists citizens with needed repairs on their homes and landscape and we volunteer at the Virginia Zoological Park with the Horticulture Department.

Y'Art
The Backyard Gardeners create unique and individual pieces of art to display in your garden. The glass topiaries add "bling" to your landscape. Handcrafted by the members, each is different and add just the right amount of sparkle to your gardens. Gazing balls covered with glass beads are interesting and artistic in your landscape. They also remove the concern about the fragility of other gazing balls-they are heavy and tough and essentially hurricane proof! In addition to the glass art, The Backyard Gardeners create leaf castings of a variety of types of leaves. Coming in sizes that vary from the size of a playing card to ones that can be used as side tables, these pieces of art are unusual and beautiful. The various types of Y'Art created by the group are available for purchase at many local garden shows. Check our home page for listings of any upcoming Y'Art events.
